Urgent Urgent Urgent!!
At this time our equine divisions
are in dire need. We have
always depended on you as the horses depend on us. When
law enforcement calls us, we are there for them and for the horses.
Very few Humane Societies are set up for horses. We have to look at
what will happen if there is no where for them to go, we have always tried
to fill the void that currently exists. There are counties that
will do nothing about large animal neglect without a place to send the
animals. For 12 years we have tried to make a difference, we have
tried to improve animal welfare in Indiana. We have been there when
the communities needed us to care for the animals, abuse and neglect is
horrifying to witness, but is more horrible when nothing is done to correct
the problem, because there is not a place to send the animals.
IHR Central, Central West and
Southwest are feeding on a day to
day basis, with hopes of more donations. Most division leaders are using their paychecks/retirement/savings/etc to care for rescued horses. Across the state we
are currently caring for over 136 horses. Most of these are
available for adoption but several are still under medical care. Please
look at our websites and see if you can help a horse in need. We
realize the economy is in bad shape, gasoline prices are outrageous, but the horses did not ask to be neglected or
abused, they have been turned over to the rescue to receive care and love.
We have the love and the volunteers to give the care, and the space to
provide the care - Funds are urgently needed for
farrier, vaccinations, hay, grain and many supplements. We can not and
the horses can not survive without your help! 2008 marks the 8th year
that Animal Protection Coalition, Inc. has been in operation to help
animals, IHR has been rescuing horses for over 12 years, please help us continue our mission to improve animal welfare in
the State of Indiana!
Our nation was built on combined
effort and individual sacrifices. Efforts that have been made by our
organization with your support to improve animal welfare will transcend
generations. The financial stress placed on each and every one of us
will stand as a commitment to make the world a better place. We can
only hope and pray that people in power see this commitment and respond by
providing financial assistance.
We work with many local schools and organizations
to educate the children and let them know that animals deserve love and
compassion, when we plant this seed it will grow and affect the lives of our
generation and the generations to come; however we can not do it without your support. Please collect your
extra change for the horses, ever little bit helps!
Spring is here and warm weather is coming. Please consider making a change to
your family and adopt or foster an animal in need!

Euthanasia
Euthanasia is a subject no
one really wants to talk about, and one that we most often think about
when horses are old, infirm, or otherwise in need of relief from their
suffering. A year ago we would not be discussing euthanasia to the
degree that we are talking about it this year. The subject of
euthanasia has become a mandatory discussion for anyone who truly has
the best interests of horses at heart. The reality is rescues are full
and overflowing, and suitable homes are few and far between. The
hay and grain prices have skyrocketed with no end in sight and
donations slim and far between, there is currently no relief in sight.
We come into contact with many people who want to drop their horses off
here and let us deal with the problems. They talk about how much they
love their horses, but are unwilling in many cases, to shoulder their
responsibility to their horses, which often includes, making sure that
they provide a dignified and humane end for their animal, of whatever
kind it may be.
Many of us have talked for a long time about
the possibility of, "in the future" having to do a lot more euthanizing
than we are used to doing, and for very different reasons than we have
been accustomed to doing in the past. Unfortunately, the times, i.e.
financial instability all around, skyrocketing feed/hay costs, drought,
and non-existent donations have turned that future time into the now.
We still have many horses that came to us from
the Stallings/Gibson County seizure we wanted so much for these horses,
to be able to go on to live happy and healthy lives and now, sadly, they
stand in stalls or the pasture with no adoptions pending. The only
other thing that we can hope to give to these horses who have endured so
much, is a dignified and peaceful ending, here in their own home, with
us close by their side.
No one likes it, but those of us dealing with the
rescue on a daily basis understand what is staring us in the face, and also
understand what needs to be done, and who has to do it. To put it
very simply, there are many more horses than there are either rescues, or
suitable permanent homes. One horse is expensive, a lot of horses are
really expensive. Many do not understand that horses eat all day, everyday, the
year round, with no time off. Those of us who truly love horses and work
closely with them, understand that some serious re-arranging needs to take
place immediately, which means that we must either have more donations
coming in, or downsize to the degree that we can afford.
It is our deep belief that euthanasia is
not a dirty word. Humanely euthanizing a horse who has been abused, starved, or is old, infirm,
neglected, with no hope of recovery, or for any of the other reasons
that we have euthanized for in the past. Times have changed, and they
have changed drastically. Be assured that we will continue to do all
that we can for horses; that all of our decisions are made with the
best interests of the horses in mind. We care for the horses that have
been entrusted to us and we are committed to doing the very best for
them, and that will include humanely euthanizing any horse that does not
have a good, healthy, happy life, with a suitable home in its
future. Of course, each horse represents an individual case, and our
decisions have always, and will continue to be made on an individual
basis. It is our hope that when others learn what responsible horse
ownership entails they will become empowered in their resolve
to do the right thing by their horses. Being quiet, and
working under the "radar" is not our way, and we feel that to present
the subject in the cleansing light of day, is the only course that we
would consider opting for. Yes, we are the voices for the horses, and
they look to us daily to do the right thing, and our promise to them is,
We Will.
To those of you who donate to care for the
horses, and to all of you who support us with your prayers, thank you so
very much. We are very grateful to each of you for your support.
